The L-theanine and caffeine ratio for focus
For years my version of “focus” was just… more coffee. Second cup, third cup, and by 2pm a weird wired-but-tired thing where I was buzzing and useless at the same time. Honestly embarrassing in hindsight.
Then I found the thing that fixed it, and it’s almost annoyingly simple: the right L-theanine and caffeine ratio for focus — not more caffeine, just caffeine plus one cheap amino acid that takes the edge off.
What’s the L-theanine and caffeine ratio for focus?
The number that keeps showing up in the research is 2:1 — roughly 200 mg of L-theanine to 100 mg of caffeine. One cup of coffee is about 100 mg caffeine, so you pair it with 200 mg L-theanine. That’s the whole recipe.
L-theanine is an amino acid from green tea. On its own it’s mildly calming — raises alpha brain waves, the relaxed-but-alert state. Caffeine on its own is the opposite: alert, but also jittery, and it borrows energy you pay back at the crash.
Put them together at 2:1 and they cancel each other’s worst parts. The caffeine gives you the drive. The theanine sands off the jitter and softens the crash. What’s left is the clean part — steady attention without the buzz. Which is wild, honestly, because neither one does that alone.
The actual study
The combination has been tested directly. In one trial, people given L-theanine with caffeine were faster and more accurate on attention-switching tasks — and reported feeling less tired — than caffeine alone.[1] The effect that mattered most was on task-switching: that constant pinging between tabs and thoughts. The combo held attention steadier than coffee on its own.
It’s not a stimulant stacked on a stimulant. It’s a stimulant with its rough edges filed down.
How I run it
Dead simple: one coffee (~100 mg caffeine) plus a 200 mg L-theanine capsule. Or if I want it precise, 100 mg caffeine + 200 mg theanine on an empty-ish stomach, mid-morning — about 90 minutes after waking, once my own cortisol has already peaked.
Then I drop into one 90-minute focus block before the theanine’s edge wears off. That pairing — the stack plus the block — is the closest thing I’ve found to a focus “on” switch.
A few honest notes. Start with 100 mg theanine if you’re sensitive — some people feel too mellow at 200. Skip it after about 2pm so the caffeine doesn’t wreck your sleep. And it won’t out-run a bad night — no stack does. It’s a lever, not a fix.

Caffeine timing is one of ten levers in the focus system — the others are light, the 90-minute block, when you eat, and a few things people never think about.
